Women's leather slingback
The women's leather slingback: elegance and meticulous finishes
A slingback is a shoe that draws attention. Its back strap, topline and toe shape are visible from every angle, with nothing to hide them. That makes the material decisive: supple, well-tanned leather gives the strap just the right tension, the topline a clean edge, and the shoe as a whole the structure that sets a shoemaker's shoe apart.
At ANDRÉ, shoemakers since 1896, we select European hides for their consistency as well as their softness. Discover our full range of women's slingbacks.
Why choose a leather slingback?
The benefits of leather: structure, suppleness and patina
- Structure : on a slingback, it's essential. Leather maintains the shape of the topline and prevents the strap from deforming, whereas synthetic material loosens after a few weeks.
- Suppleness : the upper conforms to the front of the foot without creating pressure points, limiting friction along the topline—the most sensitive area of this style.
- Breathability : real comfort in transitional seasons, when you wear your slingbacks with thin socks or barefoot.
- Patina : leather develops nuanced shades at the flex points and gains depth, making each pair slightly different over the months.
Leather and goatskin: our catalog materials
Smooth leather is our signature material for slingbacks: dense and even, it gives the topline the clean finish you notice immediately, and it is easy to polish. Goatskin, finer and lighter, offers remarkable suppleness from the very first wears: it is the choice to favor if you are concerned about the break-in period or if your feet are sensitive. These two materials are used on our pointed-toe and round-toe styles, from flats to low heels, particularly in our selection of Black slingbacks.
Your frequently asked questions about women's leather slingbacks
How do you care for a leather slingback?
Dust the upper after each wear with a soft cloth, paying particular attention to the two areas that experience the most wear: the strap fastening and the edge of the vamp. Every three to four weeks, condition the leather with polish that matches its shade, let it absorb, then buff to bring out the patina. Air-dry only, away from any heat source. Store your pairs flat, without stacking them, so the strap does not bend—a pronounced crease in a thin strap cannot be repaired.
How can you prevent the strap from slipping at the heel?
First, check its position: the strap should sit just above the heel bone and allow room for no more than one finger. Tightening it by one notch solves most cases. If the foot still slips, the cause is often at the front: non-slip pads under the ball of the foot prevent it from sliding forward, while an adhesive heel grip placed inside the vamp reduces the volume. The good news with leather is that if the strap has stretched with wear, a cobbler can shorten it by a few millimeters.
What should you wear with a leather slingback?
For the office, wear it with pleated trousers or a suit: the exposed ankle lightens a structured outfit. With a midi skirt or a flowing dress, a pointed-toe style creates a very elegant vertical line. In the evening, smooth black or ecru leather is enough, without embellishment. One final shoemaker's tip: match the finish of your bag to that of the upper—smooth leather with smooth leather, matte material with matte material.
