Women's leather Derby shoes: a shoe made to last
The Derby is a shoe with structure. An open lacing system, an upper mounted on a sturdy sole, a clean-cut shape: everything about its construction calls for a material capable of standing the test of time. That's why leather suits it so well. Where synthetic material becomes marked and then cracks, well-chosen leather develops a patina, gains depth, and tells the story of the seasons you've spent with it.
At ANDRÉ, a shoemaker since 1896, we select our hides for their durability as much as for their flexibility. Discover our full range of women's Derby shoes.
Why choose a leather Derby shoe?
The benefits of leather: durability, patina, and lasting comfort
- Durability : leather maintains the shoe's structure. The heel counter stays firm, the upper does not collapse at the sides, and the Derby retains its shape even after months of wear.
- Patina : this is leather's signature. Flexing areas develop subtle variations, the color deepens, and your pair gradually becomes unique.
- Comfort : leather softens where the foot moves, without deforming elsewhere. Combined with the Derby's open lacing, it provides a fit that few shoes can offer.
- Durability : when regularly conditioned, a leather Derby can last for several years and, depending on its construction, can be resoled.
Smooth leather or split leather: our materials in the catalog
Smooth leather is the top-grain side of the hide: dense and even, it can be polished and stands up well to city life in all weather. It is the most versatile choice, in black as well as brown or burgundy. Split leather, taken from the lower part of the hide, has a soft, matte appearance that is warmer to the eye and flexible from the first wears. It does, however, require different care: dry brushing and waterproofing spray, without polish. You'll find both materials on our flat and low-heeled styles, particularly in our selection of women's black derby shoes.
Your frequently asked questions about women's leather derby shoes
How do you care for leather derby shoes?
Always start by dusting them with a soft brush, paying particular attention to the join between the upper and the sole. Every three to four weeks, apply polish that matches the shade, let it penetrate for a few minutes, then buff with a soft cloth: this is what brings out the patina. After rain, dry them at room temperature with absorbent paper inside, never near a heat source. A wooden shoe tree between wears preserves the shape and absorbs moisture. One final shoemaker's tip: alternate your pairs, as leather needs a full day to dry completely.
Does leather soften with wear?
Yes, gradually. During the first few days, the leather primarily flexes at the points of movement, around the toes and instep. Allow one to two weeks of regular wear for a derby shoe to fully adapt to your foot. You can speed up the process by wearing it at home for short periods and conditioning the upper before its first outings: supple leather bends, while dry leather creases. Choose your usual size—the open lacing will always leave you some room for adjustment.
What should you wear with leather derby shoes?
Derby shoes thrive on contrasts. With raw denim, they create a clean foundation; with wide-leg trousers or a suit, they add a strong, grounded presence. The most appealing pairing is with a flowing dress or a midi skirt, where the lightness of the fabric responds to the sturdiness of the shoe. In autumn and winter, pair them with knee-high socks or opaque tights, and match your belt's finish to that of the upper: smooth leather with smooth leather, matte material with matte material.
