Women's black ballet flats

Women's black ballet flat: the timeless wardrobe essential

If you could keep only one pair by your front door, it would probably be this one. The black ballet flat does not seek attention: it complements. It works with jeans on Monday morning, with a dress on Saturday night, and in both cases, it gets it right. This useful subtlety is what makes it one of our best-selling shoes year after year.

At ANDRÉ, shoemakers since 1896, we offer it in styles ranging from the most understated flat model to versions with a strap or a low heel. Discover our full range of women's ballet flats and Mary Janes.

How to wear black ballet flats?

For everyday wear, with jeans or trousers

This is where they shine. With straight-leg or slightly cropped jeans, black ballet flats reveal the ankle and streamline the silhouette. With pleated trousers or a suit, they add a clean touch without the stiffness of a pump, ideal for a day packed with appointments. A shoemaker's tip: if your trousers are long, choose a style with a slightly lower-cut vamp to make your legs look longer.

For a dressed-up look, with a dress or skirt

With a flowing dress or a midi skirt, black ballet flats do exactly the opposite of what you might expect: they do not make the outfit more demure; they make it more modern. A smooth leather style, optionally with a low heel, is all you need to move from casual to polished. With black tights in winter, the leg-lengthening effect is particularly flattering.

Classic, strappy or open: black styles in the collection

  • Classic ballet flat : rounded toe, low-cut upper, no fastening. The most versatile option.
  • Mary Jane ballet flat : a strap across the instep for enhanced support and a retro touch. Discover them in our women’s Mary Jane shoes.
  • Open ballet flat : open toes or sides, perfect from the first warm days.
  • Low-heeled ballet flat : two to four centimetres that improve your posture. See our heeled ballet flats.

Frequently asked questions about women’s black ballet flats

Do black ballet flats go with all your outfits?

Almost always, yes—and that is precisely their strength. Black acts as an anchor: it structures a colourful outfit, lengthens a dark silhouette and never competes with a print. Two nuances, however. With a very light outfit in midsummer, a beige or camel leather ballet flat may sometimes look brighter. And if you wear a black belt or bag, make sure the finishes complement each other: smooth leather with smooth leather, nubuck with a matte material.

How do you care for a black leather ballet flat?

Black has one advantage—it hides dust—and one drawback: scratches show. Dust the upper after each wear, then condition it every three to four weeks with black shoe polish, which conceals micro-scratches while softening the leather. Buff with a soft cloth to revive the depth of the colour. Air-dry only, away from a heat source, and use a shoe tree inside to preserve the shape.
